Increase Access to Care for Uninsured
The American Cancer Society will advocate the District funds the cancer early detection programs; provide diagnostic treatment; support the cancer registry; and ensures access to oncologists for cancer patients. In 2008, the RAND DC Healthcare Assessment Study commissioned by the city cited a 24 percent access rate to specialists.
The current inadequacy of the DC Medicaid Fund significantly impacts the delivery of cancer diagnostic and treatment services. The City Council approved an increase to Medicaid in the 2009 Budget Act, however, it was tabled until April 2009 due to the economic climate. The Society will advocate for the release of these funds and improvements to the safety net to ensure adequate treatment services are accessible.
Unless specifically noted otherwise, the Society, and not ACS CAN, is conducting the activities described on this page.
