July 2009 Legislative Update

On July 1 District healthcare advocates and insurance firms reached a final agreement on the draft legislation for the High Risk Insurance Pool bill. The Bill reflects a remarkable compromise, the charge on the premiums begins at 125 percent and will not exceed 150 percent. Additionally, the pre-existing condition exclusion is set for six months. The draft legislation now proceeds to the DC City Council Member Muriel Ward, Committee Chair for oversight on insurance issues.

The DC ACT! Team will host a Ward 5 House Party as an ACS CAN fund-raiser on July 31 at the Brooks Mansion. The theme "Together We CAN Eliminate Healthcare Inequity's" will focus on garnering CAN member supporters for our Healthcare Reform Campaign. Ward 5 home to Saundra Brown-Asante, DC State Lead Ambassador (SLA) has the highest rates of prostate and colorectal cancer.

Thomas Hitter most recently signed up to serve as a Legislative Ambassador. Thomas resides in Ward 1 and will focus on engaging residents and other organizations in this district to actively support our advocacy mission in DC. Thank you, Thomas!

ACS extends a hearty welcome to Swati Bhanja, she will intern this summer in our National Capital Office researching state income tax check-off funds as a means to sustain the DC cancer prevention and treatment programs.
