Legislative Priorities 2009

Increasing Access to Health Care

The American Cancer society believes that all persons ought to have access to comprehensive, affordable and quality health care, regardless of race, ethnicity, marital or parental status, employment status, ability to pay, or preexisting health conditions. The Society will advocate for expanding access to health care for all individuals.

Assuring Access to Cancer Medications

A priority of the Society is to ensure high-quality cancer medications for adequate symptom control that improve the quality of life for cancer patients.

Assuring Access to Cancer Screening and Treatment

The American Cancer Society believes that state laws requiring insurance carriers to cover the cost of routine cancer screenings and treatment are needed to protect health care quality. The Society will advocate protecting vital cancer care laws that assure access to life-saving cancer screening and treatment this includes increasing funding for the state’s Screening For Life program and protecting funding for the DE Cancer Treatment Program.

Protecting Funding for Tobacco Use Reduction and Cancer Control Programs – CRFP

The American Cancer Society believes that funding from the tobacco master settlement should be used to mitigate the illnesses caused by the use of tobacco products. The Society will advocate funding tobacco control programs at the CDC recommended level and increasing funding for cancer prevention and control (MSA$).

Assuring Balanced Pain Policy

A priority of the American Cancer Society is to ensure adequate pain and symptom control -- essential elements to improve the quality of life for cancer patients.The Society will advocate improving treatment and management of pain and its accompanying symptoms.

Promoting Prevention Programs and Services Including Good Nutrition, Physical Activity and Sun Safety
