Making a difference in CA

After working with the American Cancer Society, California Division as a Legislative Ambassador in Burbank, James Murtha´s many years of hard work and dedication to the cause were recognized by the President’s Council on Service & Civic Participation and President Barack Obama. James, an incoming State Lead Ambassador, was presented with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for 2008. He was also a recipient of a Walt Disney Company 2008 EARS To You award.

When he was diagnosed with head, neck and throat cancer in late 2002, James Murtha and his family were devastated. “I remember when my wife and I told our children, how they dropped to the ground crying as if they had been shot,” he recalled. Despite the life-altering diagnosis, James did not give up. He beat his disease and then joined the American Cancer Society to help others through their fights.

Through his personal battle with his cancer, James realized how “lucky and blessed” he is to have the loving family that he has. “It made me appreciate how special each minute of each day is. If I can help just one person or their family get through this battle then I will have accomplished something of merit,” he said. James continues to help others in need and is currently the incoming State Lead Ambassador. We applaud James on receiving these celebrated awards and thank him for all of his hard work.
