Colorectal Cancer
Evidence has shown that if everyone age 50 and older were screened for colorectal cancer, the death rate could be cut in half. Asymptomatic until its advanced stages, colon cancer has a five-year survival rate of over 90 percent if detected early. To ensure that everyone in Massachusetts has access to colorectal cancer screenings, we are focusing our advocacy efforts on this legislation, which will save lives and reduce costs:
An Act Ensuring Access to Life-Saving Colorectal Cancer Screenings (SB 451/HB 2185)
This bill would require private health insurance plans to cover the full range of colon cancer screenings backed by evidence-based research, putting Massachusetts in line with 26 states and the District of Columbia that guarantee such coverage, as does Medicare.
