NC State Lead Ambassador
Mr. Williamson was born in Chicago, IL but grew up in Houston, TX. He and his wife moved to North Carolina in 1990 and lived outside Raleigh for three years while he attended law school. In 1993, he moved to Asheville where he lived until 2008 when he moved to Charlotte. He is married to his wife Cindy and has three children, his son Connor is a cancer survivor. Mr. Williamson received his Bachelor of Science from Sam Houston State University in 1990 and his Juris Doctor from Campbell University in 1993 and he is admitted to practice in North Carolina.
Mr. Williamson first became associated with the American Cancer Society in 2000 while living in Asheville. He initially assisted with local Relay For Life events before joining and eventually heading the Asheville Leadership Council. Working with ACS staff member, Mary Nesbitt, he led the charge to create a Hope Lodge at Mission Hospitals in Asheville. Mr. Williamson has traveled to Washington D.C. twice to speak and lobby on behalf of the American Cancer Society. He currently serves on the Charlotte Area Leadership Council.
Stephen B. Williamson concentrates his practice on complex commercial litigation and has significant experience in the areas of employment, construction and asbestos litigation. He also maintains an active administrative practice, appearing before numerous state and federal agencies. He frequently lectures on construction, ethics and employment law issues. In addition, Mr. Williamson offers consultative services to clients facing significant litigation.
His experience includes a ten-year relationship representing the second-largest U.S.-based contractor and leading global engineering, construction and services company; a fifteen-year relationship defending one of the world’s leading commercial boiler manufacturers; and a seven-year relationship representing a regional hospital system in all investigations, policy matters and workplace-related litigation.
Prior to law school, Mr. Williamson was a police officer in Texas. Building on that experience, combined with his experience in employment law, he has developed a reputation as a problem solver for employers facing workplace violence issues. He develops policies, implements procedures and creates crisis intervention plans. He has also developed a collaborative approach to training employers on proactive methods for evaluating and intervening in situations before violence occurs.
In May 2009, Mr. Williamson assumed the role of State Lead Ambassador for North Carolina and will work closely with the NC Government Relations staff. He will lead a statewide team of advocacy volunteers to ensure that the American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s (ACS CAN) state and federal legislative priorities are met.
