Raise School Nutrition Standards
in New York State

We need strong nutrition standards in schools to help fight the obesity epidemic. Here's why: The obesity epidemic is growing at an alarming rate, and up to one-third of all cancer deaths may be related to overweight, obesity and lack of physical exercise. Because the eating habits developed in childhood frequently last a lifetime, it is critical to address obesity among children effectively. The American Cancer Society supports legislation to ensure that schools offer and serve healthier foods, drinks and snacks.



Get Involved: Don't Let Health Schools Get Left Behind

The Legislature needs to act on a law that will set good nutrition standards for our schools, remove sodas from vending machines, and start us on the road to real physical education programs. The American Cancer Society and many other groups concerned about healthy eating and physical activity intend to make school nutrition a priority for New York lawmakers during the 2009 Legislative year. Gov. Paterson has introduced a strong, comprehensive Healthy Schools Act.
